THE STORY OF HURLR

Our TY-Mini business journey began in November 2022 as part of the Student Enterprise Programme. Our vision was clear from the very outset; we wanted to solve a problem that Irish teenagers in particular face on a daily basis.

Our business idea was to create a product that could hold a hurley and attach to a bicycle to make travelling with a hurl easier, more convenient and safer. We created prototypes using steel but were careful to ensure that the product wasn’t too heavy. We felt that our product would appeal to young hurlers who we observed holding their hurl in one hand and the handle bar of their bike with the other whilst cycling to training or matches. We came up with the name ‘hurlr’ for our product, as it is a hybrid of the words ‘hurl’ and ‘holder’ and is also short and memorable.

Once our product concept was born, we worked hard to continually solve problems and improve our product design. You can view the production process here. In March 2023, we were delighted to win the Laois Senior Student Enterprise Programme County Final. From this there was lots of publicity and the orders ramped up. We are currently talking to local production companies with a view to outsourcing production. We are also currently working towards the National Final of the Student Enterprise Competition which takes place on May 5th 2023 in Croke Park.

Our design is currently pending design protection from the Intellectual Property Office of Ireland based in Kilkenny and we are also trademarking the hurlr logo.

We have recently linked up with DS Sports in Portlaoise and we are now selling our product there as well as online via this website. We are continuing to look for new retail partners and we also plan to link up with GAA clubs across Laois.
